Every time Steve went to South Dakota with his family while he was growing up he always wanted to stop to see the Mammoth Site. His father would tell him it was just a tourist trap and not real. Steve was finally glad to have the chance to check this out. It was a great find. We learned so much about the Woolly Mammoths that were in this area thousands of years ago. This site was a sink hole at one time filled with warm water. It attracted animals year round because grass always grew around the edges. Every 10 years or so a Mammoth would go in for a bath and not be able to get out because the rocks would be too slippery. Thousands of years later, it looked like a hill. An excavator was about to build on this very site when they noticed some large bones and stopped the construction project. Today, they have found over 50 mammoths and still have 65 more feet to dig.
